Lynette: Parlodel (bromocriptine) is only contraindicated in lactation
because of its effects on mother's milk supply, not because of adverse
effects on the baby. To quote from Dr. Hale's '96 edition: "It is
sometimes used in hyperprolactinemic patients who still continue to
breastfeed, although the incidence of side effects is significant." (I
believe he is referring to side effects in the mother, not the baby - I
hope Dr. Hale himself will clarify).
I seriously doubt that this one dose would in any way harm the baby, so I
would doubt that she would need to pump and dump. If I were advising this
mom, I would recommend that she nurse frequently and use necessary
engorgement-relieving measures.
Hope this helps, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
