Dr. Denham - I'm sure you're aware that alprazolam (Xanax) is a terrible
sleeper - and it's major problem in depression is that people get
dis-inhibited and tend to do terrible things (like the Rev. James Baker and
his antics with Jessica Hahn..... but may he would have done that off
meds....) - even suicide. I believe that alprazolam should never be given
to a depressed patient. There are many anti-depressants that are wonderful
sleepers - and some actually straighten out the disrupted sleep
architecture seen in depression (short REM latentency, etc). This woman
needs a good doctor who will prescribe something safe, effective, and ok to
breastfeed with, like nortryptyline or desipramine, or doxepin, or even
zoloft.
