I am pleased to report the following information from the College of Family
Physicians of Canada (CFPC):
In May 1996, the CFPC endorsed the World Health Organization's International
Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, the WHO/UNICEF joint statement
on protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, and the Innocenti
Declaration.
The CFPC also struck a Task Force on Child Health (TFCH). Recommendations
and a series of "10 steps" guides for family physicians in their offices
were developed by the TFCH to be shared with the CFPC, university
departments of family medicine and practising family physicians across
Canada.
Recommendation 9 of 14 is as follows:
The CFPC and university departments of family medicine should ensure that
family physicians have the knowledge, attitudes and skills to promote,
support and protect breastfeeding.
Members of the TFCH are:
Cheryl Levitt, Chair, MBBCH, CCFP
Mary Doyle-MacIsaac, MD
Inese Grava-Gubins, MA
Glenna Ramsay MD, CCFP
Walter Rosser, MD, CCFP
