The bacteria that cause dental caries ("cavities") are transmitted
mother-to-child as shown by DNA fingerprinting studies.  How this occurs
is one of the questions were are investigating in a large, longitudinal
study of mother-child pairs.  And before the question gets asked, yes,
there is a breastfeeding study component.  The results will not be
available for another year or so.
