In response to Gloria Thai (Why are some of these moms getting hormonal
birth control immediately after birth?), our clinic OB's give B/C pills to
be started on the second Sunday after delivery (progesterone-only to
breastfeeding moms) to many moms. When asked why the timing, the reply
was "Because if we wait any longer, they come back pregnant." I guess
someone must have sex on their mind soon after delivery! Moms are no
longer getting Depo-provera before discharge because the company
guidelines say doctors must wait 6 weeks now. So at least some milk
supply can become established before hormonal birth control becomes an
issue.
