I had better introduce myself again as I have been quiet for a while.
I am Val Best, a IBCLC in private practice in the town of Busselton,
Western Australia, population 18 000 (with 3 IBCLC's). We recently
bought a farm, 116 acres and are running some cattle, breeders, on it
and having good fun to. As this is a new venture, we are needing to
do a lot of reading and in one of the farming 'how to' books I came
across "How to make colostrum", I thought you would all like this.
"Mix 1 beaten egg in 30 ml of water, 1/2 tsp of castor oil, and 60 ml
whole milk, feed to the calf 3 times a day for the first 3 days".
The calf, if fed by its mum, needs 2-3 litres of colostrum in the
first 12 hours after birth.
I found this astounding, we battle to get enough colostrum to cover
the bottom of a bottle (if expressing), and they have 2-3 litres.
Seems a bit unfair to me!!! What do you all think of the colostrum
recepie!!
