A local advocate for healthy living distributes some advice concerning
breastfeeding. [YAAAY!] He has two dietary recommendations which I'd like
you to respond to. Do you know of published evidence that these are good
recommendations? Do you have anecdotal evidence?
1. Nursing mothers should include a teaspoon of cold-pressed safflower oil in
their daily diet.
2. To increase milk production, eat apricots, asparagus, fresh green beans,
carrots, parsley, peas, pecans, sweet potatoes.
I can understand the safflower oil as a source of poly-unsaturated fatty
acids. But must it be safflower, not another oil? Is a teaspoon enough?
The list of galactogogues sounds great---all good foods, right? But wasn't
parsley mentioned recently as a way to decrease supply...?
