Did anyone see Caryl and Marilyn's show on Tues June 3 on the subject of
expectant parents and new babies? The Dr. they interviewed was older, and
stated: "They used to tell us that there was no difference between breast
and bottle feeding, but then we found out that that information came from
the formula companies. Now we know that breastfeeding is better." When
asked about moms who "can't" breastfeed due to "too many problems", though,
he said we had to avoid making them feel guilty. No mention was made of
help available for such moms. Below is the email I sent to abc:

I just watched a segment of Caryl and Marilyn dealing with new parents. I
was very pleased to hear Dr. Lendon Smith state that breastfeeding is
definitely superior to formula feeding. He mentioned the studies that show
higher IQ's in breastfed children as a result of the perfect provision of
the correct fatty acids in mothers' milk as opposed to those in artificial
baby milk. He explained the need for the baby to learn to open his mouth
wide in order to achieve a correct latch. I was disappointed, however,
that no mention was made of the availability of certified lactation
consultants or of support groups such as La Leche League for those moms who
desire to breastfeed and run into problems. Thank you for airing
information that truthfully presents the importance of breastfeeding. I
hope you will continue to include such information in your programs, and to
recognize certified lactation consultants as a resource of up-to-date
information on breastfeeding. Thank you.
