Hi, everyone who remembers me from back-when. I would like to comment on
what solids to begin baby on. I think it so very interesting to hear and
learn cross-culturally, not to mention from experience of others!
Ann Davis suggested that the first solids to be offerred should be fruits
and veggies. This is usually true for here in Israel also. However, she
gave as examples citrus and corn. In my experience, corn is pretty hard to
digest - sometimes even for adults (they see the kernals in their feces!),
and citrus for some is highly allergenic. I had a mom who was still
exclusively BFing her 9 mo. old and Mom ate an orange, and nursing baby
broke out in full-body rash. I know that this is extreme case, but I
believe that I saw that the ICEA recommends giving citrus and tomato only
at 9 months, and cautiously.
Ann suggested meats as next food to give, followed by grains, followed by
dairy. I think that I would switch meat with grains. Again, I think that
it was ICEA that suggested the order of grains (i.e., cereals) to baby be:
rice, oatmeal, wheat, mixed. Did I get that right? I would think that the
complex carbohydrates would be "easier" on digestion and easier source for
calories than meat. But I am not a dietician. What say you people?
Best regards from HOT Beer Sheva, Israel
