hello, my first message, I'm one of the dreaded egotistical MDs, also
mother of a breastfeeding toddler, and actively trying to build TRUE
MD support for breastfeeding in the state of WI (anyone with connections
to the residency pgms in state or with curriculum ideas ple e-mail me
privately)

I couldn't pass up the patch commentary...
the patch obviously gets the addictive substance into the bloodstream,
but avoids the toxic additives (more that 20 in most cigs, incl arsnic,
etc.) and the dangers of 2nd hand smoke.  EVEN IF a mom continues to use
the patch for a long time... indefinately, ie keeps her addiction, the
patch is a far superior source of nicotine than commercial cigs. AND the
benifits of bf (nutritional and developmnental) far outweigh the
nicotine exposure...... which idealy we'd like to avoid.  I would work
towards abstinance.
