Dear Lactnetters

The receipt of the production edited by Christa Herzog-Isler and Klaus
Homigmann answered a lot of questions raised on the lactnet about cleft
palate thank you for that advice.

I had an interesting exercise preparing for a seminar I am conducting on
8th October for the Australian Nurses Federation on Breastfeeding the
Vulnerable Newborn..

As an ex NICU midwife I carried (as my crutch) a Manual of Neonatal Care
published in l980 (I don't believe I looked up breastfeeding in l980)
Edited by Cloherty MD and Stark MD from a Joint Program in Neonatology at
Harvard Beth Israel Boston Hospital for Women and childrens Hospital
Medical Center Boston. While the some of the information would not pass
muster in today's breastfeeding world there were pages and pages of
excellent information about breastmilk and breastfeeding including
insufficient supply and demand feeding.

An opening statement read "Breast milk is of proved value as a nutrient
source for the full-term infant and it is now [l980] being increasingly
utilized for the feeding of the premature infant. However controlled
studies demonstrating clear superiority mandating its use are lacking and
it should be considered as one of the alternative nutrient sources
available" p 328

However other texts on neonatal intensive care as late as l993-l994 do not
even include breastmilk or lactation in the index.

Of course l996 l997 editions by Henschel and Inch and Sandra Lang I
have most of the other major texts, resources and study guides. Any other
contributions eg articles on NICU and breastfeeding would be helpful. I
have spent hours on the Archives and Internet and have excellent access to
University libraries.

HELP REQUIRED

DO LACTNETTERS HAVE ANY INFORMATION OR UPDATED CASE HISTORIES ON
BREASTFEEDING AND THE PRETERM OR SICK BABY? I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME MORE
GLOBAL INFORMATION.

I HAVE VISITING PRIVILEGES IN VICTORIA (AUS) TO NICUS IN WHICH I HAVE
WORKED AND SO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO LOCAL PRACTICE WHICH IS TOP NOTCH IN SOME
MAJOR HOSPITALS.

AS USUAL I AM PRESSED FOR TIME IN MY BUSY 'BREASTFEEDING CONSULTING LIFE''
SO WOULD APPRECIATE ANY STORIES NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE

THANK YOU
