Dr. Allan Bruckheim's syndicated question-and-answer column in
yesterday's local paper featured a question on diarrhea. His response
points out the dangers of dehydration, saying treatment used to be
"only water or a rehydration fluid" for 24-48 hours. He goes on to
discuss "more up-to-date recommendations," which include "the value of
giving babies lactose-free formula" and a plug for Pedialyte. Not a
single mention of breastfeeding or breastfed babies, although he does
say "it might be a good idea to start a baby on some formula early in
the course of his or her illness"! E-mail me privately if you'd like
the full text so you can respond to him.
