Elemental iron is the same iron all the doctors are driving all of us
insane about.  If it is no good in the well water, why is it good in
infant formula and cereal?  Huh?  Answer me that.  Too much iron can
make you constipated.  If you have thalassemia trait, you can develop
hemochromatosis if you are constantly on too much iron over a long
period of time.  Aside from that too much iron (not an overdose which
can kill, horribly), is not a big problem.

The mother does not have to wean because nature protects her milk from
too much iron.  Remember that?  You can't increase the amount of iron in
the milk by taking more iron.
