I was working with a mom this week who had a 10 day old infant that had to
have general anesthesia for hernia repair. She was having nipple soreness
before but it had cleared up and all was fine a few days before the surgery.
Baby was drowsy for 2 days and didn't nurse well but perked up after that.
Only problem is, she has extremely sore nipples and has decided to wean.
Obviously, this is tragic and she asked me right off not to make her feel
guilty (she also mentioned that the doctor wanted to see her because he
suspected postpartum depression), but all that aside, does anyone know if the
anesthesia could have made the baby forget how to suck correctly? He had no
bottles and only used a pacifier for the few hours before the surgery. He
had been using the pacifier before without any problem. No symptoms of
thrush.
Too late for this one, but I was curious if anyone else had come across
this.
