Robyn: I have managed this lip-sucking pattern both professionally and
personally. SOME BABIES NEVER LEARN TO NOT SUCK IN THEIR LIPS. Yes, you
can try repositioning by taking him off, but what works best after this has
repeatedly failed is simply "peeling the lips" back out. My two year old
still does this when he latches on quickly. I can instantly tell by the
feeling. Every single time, the feeling disappears as soon as I peel out
his top and bottom lips. In the other cases, some babies have needed a bit
more coaxing such as gentle pressure on the bottom jaw/chin throughout the
early feedings. This usually retrains baby so that he doesn't continue to
suck in the bottom lip. It is really not a big bother and is much less
disruptive than fully unlatching and repositioning. I'm assuming that
you've worked on various positions and the issue of getting baby to open
WIDE by saying ahhh and sticking out mom's tongue for baby to mimic. There
are other positioning tricks too, but I suspect that this is a chronic lip
sucker.
