Dietary sources of DHA (USDA Composition of Foods: Raw Processed Prepared.
USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Handbook No 8 Release No. 11
Sept 1996.)
Fatty fish is the best source of DHA. Fish with > 500mg DHA/4 oz serving
(raw): bluefish, herring, bluefin tuna, swordfish, pacific sardines, salmon,
mackerel, whitefish.
Other DHA contents: 4 oz. tuna in water (253 mg), 4 oz fish sticks or patty
(145 mg), 6 large steamed shrimp (48 mg), 4 oz. fried beef brains (760 mg), 4
oz fried beef liver (329 mg), 1 large egg yolk (19 mg). Poultry that is fed
fish meal can be fair source of DHA, but you don't know what the poultry was
fed when you're buying it.
Cod liver oil, historically a routine supplement for vitamins A and D,
supplies about 500 mg DHA/tsp. Cod liver oil supplements are not currently
recommended because of the potential for toxic intakes of vitamins A and D.
