Dear Pam: I've had a couple of moms who I was called to see only after
they hadn't been able to latch their baby for several days pp. These
moms were so engorged, breasts so congested that pumping, heat and
massage did nothing. So we switched tacks. I brought them cabbage,
rinsed and crushed it and packed their breasts for 20 minutes. These
were my first times using cabbage, so I tried to hide my amazement that
it actually worked.
Cabbage and ice work because they decrease the congestion in the breast,
and the milk can then flow. It seems to me that you are dealing with a
similar problem: breasts so engorged that milk can't flow, and the
suction makes the nipples white.
Hope this helps

only as a last resort.
