I have been asked to post this to Lactnet:
<<I am interested in finding out if there is any data on the average volume
of milk consumed by nursing children. Ideally, I would like to get the
average per nursing session, and the total per day, and by a couple of
different age groups. For example, the data (if available) might look
something like this. (These numbers are just wild guesses I pulled out of
thin air. What I am looking for is *real* data!)
Volume/Session Volume/Day Child's Weight
Newborn 20 mL 150 mL 8 lb
6 months 15 mL 60 mL 14 lb
2 years 10 mL 30 mL 25
lb
The reason I am interested is that I am a Ph.D. toxicologist and I am
interested in doing some research on toxic chemicals excreted in breast milk.
For example, if an agricultural worker is accidentally sprayed with about
500 ml of a 5% malathion solution, I can estimate what the level will be in
the milk, but without having some idea of actual volume consumed by a nursing
child, I cannot calculate what the actual dose to the child would be. This
is important for determining *if* the woman should suspend nursing for a
short period of time and, if so, for how long.
