Below is my letter regarding TIMES ongoing underwhelming support of =
breastfeeding.
Gentlemen: I cannot believe that your magazine, which has such a =
world-wide distribution, has so poorly represented breastfeeding in =
your recent articles. In your articles on healthy children, brain =
growth, etc., you do not mention breastfeeding as a major contribution =
to both. Thus, by indirection, you do your readers and breastfeeding a =
disservice, allowing the inference that what the baby eats and how it is =
fed is of little consequence. Your picture of a bottle with your =
Parenttime column implies support of bottlefeeding as the first choice =
for nutrition. =20
Around the world, countries are pushing to improve their breastfeeding =
rates as the first and biggest step to improving quality of life for =
their infants and children. I think you owe it to your readers =
world-wide, to produce an extensive coverage presenting breastfeeding in =
its best lights. Of course, some mothers/babies will not or cannot =
breastfeed. That is sad, whatever, the reason. But it does not negate =
the importance and efficacy of breastfeeding as the first choice for =
feeding our world's children.
Sincerely, Chanita Stillerman, mother, concerned citizen, LC and RN
