I have had a couple of cases of moms who came to see me with sore pinched
nipples at 4 and 5 months old. We corrected positioning of course, but a
common factor in these two cases was frequent use of the Munchkin bottles.
Babies were chewing /sucking on the very small tip. The wide part was too
wide for them to get around and babies were "nipple-sucking". Similar to
what I've seen/heard complained about with the Playtex nursers with the short
stubby nipples. Why do we continue to believe that the mother's nipple is
short (like the Playtex)? Woolrich's and other's works show that the nipple
stretches in the baby's mouth to extend to the hard/soft palate junction. If
a mother has to use a bottle type feeder, I recommend Haberman for babies
stil having feeding problems or Avents once those have resolved or any other
bottle that mom chooses as long as her baby continues to go back to her
without difficulty. I have had some moms who prefer to use Habermans for
those away bottles, saying baby was less gassy, less spitty, etc. more
content with Haberman. Maybe because the flow is in the baby's control?
Also, if moms want to use plastic liners, I show them how to roll the top
down over a longer twist-tie, then tie the ends together (like the CSF bags
of Medela). Warm them up in water, then clip the corner and pour. Easier,
less messy than untying the top and trying to pour out. Larger neck bottles
like Avent are also easier to pour into. I used Playtex myself with my last
baby while I was at work. Believe me, it is a PAIN to thaw out the milk, try
to get the bag down in the holder without tearing it or dropping it and screw
the lid on without tearing it. Can't tell you how much the day care workers
dropped, spilt and wasted! And we Never had a drop of formula! So proud of
a 40 year old mom. We lasted till 41 1/2 with plenty to spare!

Thanks for the Listen
