Hi Lactnetters.

A note about Dr. Newman's asking for research re: questioning extrauterine
growth being the same as intrauterine. I attended a Breastfeeding Workshop
at the Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto, October 8, 1996, and asked the
same question of the nutritionist ( J. B. ) who was presenting "Facilitating
Optimum Nutrient Delivery of Human Milk in NICU" and she said that the "gold
standard for growth in preterm infants = intrauterine growth rates"
according to a well-known paediatrician in the 1960"s (She gave us a name
and I didn't write the name down). There was no doubt in her mind that this
is a standard and that it was gold and don't bug me. Her hand out went on to
state" - known that human milk fed preterm infants grow more slowly and have
inadequate speicific nutrient intakes especially protein and minerals.
Preterm milk decreases in protein and Na through lactation and may not
meet needs for growing preterm infant - fortify"

HSC and its seminars can be powerful because of its reputation - this to me
is a double edge sword.
