Dear Denise,
I see this happening as baby gets a little older and starts getting
teeth. Baby just needs a little guidance to adjust to these new teeth
and nursing. It happened to me too. It seems that baby is kind of sucking
breast through his teeth, therefore causing irritation. Mom needs to get
baby to open mouth wider, before putting her breast into baby's mouth. It
usually takes a little time for baby to get used to it. What I did was to
look into my children's eyes, and as I opened my mouth wide, I would
say," Do Big Ahhhhh". They would always imitate me. My 2 1/2 year old
automatically lets go and says "Ahhhhh" if I say, "Ow". Moms have had
much success with these suggestions.
Good luck,
