Just received the June July 97 edition of BABY (from moms to moms) magazine.

On cover is - Theme of " Who's cranky now?- a photo of a "Dad" grimacing with
poor baby looking very upset, probably because "someone" allowed a stranger to
pose with their baby until they got the desired shot of a crying baby!....
great!

Sandwiched between instructions for a fantastic type of "drop insTM" bottles
that are as easy as 1 2 3 is a 3/4 page article titled Baby Briefs, Breast vs.
Bottle. Graphics of "mom" doing the bottle Vs Breast show both "kinda" enjoying
it but b/f mom is rather undressed and bottlefeeding mom is in high necked
sweater.......... Most disturbing is at end of article which gives very
questionable "advantages to bottle feeding" it says "To learn more about
bottle feeding, call The Institute of Pediatric Nutrition at 1- 800 433 9016. I
called this number (it is the weekend) and got The American Academy of
Pediatrics. Please don't tell me that AAP have a funded bottlefeeding line!
Please let it be a misunderstanding.

Same magazine: A Quiz for Dads

Q Mom is breastfeeding and you feel left out. You:
a: Make bathing baby your special time together.
B: Ask your wife to give up breastfeeding
C. Give baby a bottle of formula or expressed breast milk when Mom is too busy
to nurse.

QBaby has ben colicky for two weeks and you haven't slept in what feels like
days. You:
a. Start fighting about whose turn it is to get up at night
b. Take turns going to bed early until things even out
c. get a baby sitter for an afternoon and go to a hotel for a joint snooze.

How did you score?
Mostly A's Whoops! Ask your wife for suggestions on how you can be more
involved with baby.
Mostly B's: Good work overall, but you're making life harder than it has to be.
Mostly C's: Great teamwork! Wear that new #1 Dad T - shirt with pride.

Am I living on another planet? Did dh & I manage to raise two super adults
even though one was so colicky that we walked and walked / took turns till 3 & 4
am for weeks, Kept breastfeeding.... I don't think my dh felt left out 'cause
he really helped in doing all those Daddy things, like holding, talking,
soothing, etc etc. however, ducking out to an hotel!...... pleeez Is the
answer when "poor dad feels left out------a bottle----- Kripes so far I've
only flipped through this mag and am scared to go any further lest my blood
pressure increase.

they have an email address of: [log in to unmask]

How can it be that what I considered to be the "right" answer in the daddy left
out q was the Whoops answer...... What is going on, other than something I've
been suspecting for a long time and that is, "forget any feelings the baby has,
just make sure YOU are OK"

Thanks for letting me rant.
