A mother who has ten day old twins called with the following situation:
One of her babies started having bloody stools around 7 days of age. Her
pediatrician felt this was related to breastfeeding, an allergy reaction to
food consumed by the mother. Mom stopped eating dairy products for 72
hours and has eliminated peanut butter from diet for the past 24 hours.
She had been having peanut butter daily for the past week.
The doctor had the baby discontinue breastfeeding for 24 hours initially,
and mother has returned to breastfeeding as of yesterday (4/27). Today,
however, the pediatrician recommended that Mom discontinue breastfeeding
for 72 more hours. Mother is questioning this recommendation, and wants to
know how long does it take for a food product to be completed eliminated
out of her breastmilk? Also, what else might be causing babies bloody
stools? Mom feels that breastfeeding has been going extremely well with
both babies, and has concerns about giving baby formula for 72 hours.
Any thoughts would be appreciated...
