Earlier this AM I blind-copied LACTNET a letter I fired off to Newsweek.
Below is my reply. I am sending it to all Lactnetters so that, should they
wish to write, they will know how to do so.

This is lengthy. If you wish to skip this message, feel free.

Subject: Thanks for Writing to Newsweek!

Dear Reader,

Thank you for contacting us. We receive hundreds of e-mail
messages every week, and can't answer each one personally.
But we do read all our e-mail and consider your feedback vital
to the continued excellence of Newsweek. Hopefully, the following
answers to frequently asked questions will be helpful to you.

Newsweek Letters
Frequently Asked Questions /FAQs

1. How do I get a letter published in Newsweek?

We get over 1,000 faxes, e-mail messages and pieces of mail
every week, most of it from readers responding to one of our stories.
Because there is a premium on space in the Letters column,
we can only publish a small number of these letters. Many good
letters cannot be used simply because of the limited space available.
If your letter is considered for the column and there are significant
editing questions, we will contact you by phone. Please include
a daytime phone number, and your city and state, when you write.
Newsweek reserves the right to edit all letters for space and clarity,
and letters may appear in electronic versions of Newsweek.

2. How do I submit an essay for publication as a My Turn column?

My Turn submissions should be sent to:

My Turn Editor, Newsweek
251 West 57th Street
New York, NY 10019-1894

or e-mailed to: [log in to unmask] ,
or faxed to: (212) 445-4120 (Attn: My Turn Editor)

The essay should be an original piece, about 1,100 words,
generally personal in tone, and about any topic, but not
framed as a response to a Newsweek story or another My Turn
essay. Submissions must not have been published elsewhere.
Please include your phone number and address. We should
add that the competition is very stiff (we get 600 entries
per month) and we can only print one a week. Even so, each
manuscript is given careful consideration since we are
fully aware of the time and effort involved in preparing
an essay.

For an automated message with further details about My Turns,
you may call: (212) 445-4547.
