Cleft lip repair need not require delayed breastfeeding. An article in
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by Weatherly-White, etal ("Early repair
and breast-feeding for infants with cleft lip"),
Vol. 79, pp. 879-87, 1987
Makes clear that these babies' repairs were NOT compromised by early
breastfeeding. Repairs were done in 48 hours after birth, by the way.
I urge that anyone who is helping a mother whose baby needs such repair
read this artcile and possibly share it with the surgeons with whom they
will be working!
