To Anne Bremer:
I am interested in how others will reply to this situation. Baby Daniel
should be supplemented with expressed breast milk if, indeed, he needs
supplementation. He is quite obviously showing adverse reactions to the
formula. Babies will usually drink anything offered from a bottle even if
their bellies are full since the liquid basically runs down the back of
their throat and they don't have to work at it.
I would recommend a form of supplemetation called gentle supp. whereby baby
would receive a full feeding from the bottle every so many feeds ie. three
breastfeeds and then one full bottle feed. I would stop this "topping up"
asap because it does often lead to overload.
With regards to his fussing until formula is offered I think that other
things can be done to help him. For example, someone could offer him a
finger to suck on, change his diaper and then offer him another session at
the breast, give him a twenty minute (arbitrary number) break from Mom's
arms and he may go for the breast again to top himself up.
I would certainly encourage longer sessions at both breasts for each feed
and it will likely take a while for him to wean from the top ups.
Obviously this pedi needs an education in breastfeeding , especially with
regards to the dangers of restricting time at the breast.
Good luck in your efforts ,
