Hi everyone,
I would like to hear your thoughts on air-tight storage of
breastmilk in the NICU. We frequently have micropreemies that might not
receive any feedings for several weeks, and the amounts they do receive when
starting feeds are 0.5cc to 1cc (half-strength)! Needless to say, our
freezers are full of milk in several different types of containers. Some
moms use double-bagged Playtex bags, some use Medela CSF, but most use the
volu-feeders supplied by the formula companies topped off with a nipple and
the plastic covering the nipples are packaged in.
I've tried using sterile water bottles from the formula companies and
capping it tightly with it's own screw on cap, but we run out too quickly of
the bottles. I've tried putting the water bottle cap on the volu-feeders.
Does anyone know if the volu-feeders have a cap made for it that can
be ordered, or are the companies holding out on us?
What do you all do in your NICU's?
Thanks very much,
Stacey Richards RNC, IBCLC
