 When I discuss the elimination of dairy from diets with my Nutrition
students, I am always amazed that they are not aware of alternative sources
of calcium.  I think that this is probably true of mothers too.  One of the
more unique (for people in the US) sources of calcium is to boil the bones
of meat or poultry in water with vinegar added to it.  The stock can be
reduced to small quantities that are very dense in bioavailable calcium.
In Asia, this is a common source of calcium found in wide varieties of
products including sweet and sour dishes, soups, sauces, and even hot
cereals cooked in it with sugar.  'Just a thought.
