I haven't seen a reply to Laureen Lawlor-Smith's query regarding the
recommendation in 'An Overview of solutions to breastfeeding and sucking
problems", LLLI. to give 2000 mg per day Calcium and 1000 mg per day of
magnesium for nipple vasospasm, so I'll share what little I know.
As an Area Professional Liaison Leader many years ago we had an inquiry
regarding vasospasm of the nipple and possible treatments for it. Dr.
Gregory White at that time was on the Professional Advisory Board and
would answer our questions directly. This is the first time I saw the
recommendation, but I have seen it in a couple of LLL things since then,
and I believe Dr. White to be the source (the wording is almost
identical to the working in his first letter).
I did recommend this supplement regime to some of my earlier clients (this has
been a favorite topic of mine for years) but none of the mothers reported a
significant difference, so I stopped recommending it. Perhaps it is time
to look at it again. Thanks for the reference Laureen, and
congratulations on your recent article in the British Medical Journal.
Best Wishes, Lana.
