I am looking after a mother who had a gastric bypass in 92. for obesity. Her
baby at 4weeks is 4080 gms, 120 below birthweight.She appears to be
producing lots of milk,he feeds 8 x in 24 hours and is having lots of wet
nappies. I have an article from PEDIATRICS Vol86 No. 5 Nov 1990 ,Martens W,
Martin L, Berlin C, "Failure of a nursing infant to thrive after the
Mother's Gastric Bypass for Morbid Obesity" that describes a mother who fed
her first three children without a problem then had a gastric bypass. Her
4th child had FTT. The authers found that the woman had 30% less fat content
in her milk.{they measured it using the method described by Lucas British
Med. J. 1978} I am having the mother's milk tested by Bob Gibson today. Has
anyone else had experience with this problem?
The mother was found to have B12 deficiency at 30weeks pregnancy and she has
been on B12 injections since {B12 deficiency is common after gastric bypass}
