Ultrasound probably would not "see" a tiny fragment of placenta, but would
show if the endometrial cavity was larger than expected--although the
range of normal may be quite large in the postpartum period.  It is
certainly less invasive than a D&C, and may be useful, but it is possible
to do D&C's under local anethesia in the office, so this may be an option
if this is a persistent concern.
