the reason for recommending olive oil could be because it is also
anti-fungal.  I usually have the moms massage and hand express their milk
into the flange before pumping, less washing than using an oil or Lansinoh as
some suggest. Most mothers who are new to pumping are not told how important
it is to lubricate the flange to prevent sore nipples.  This is one of my
beefs against pharmacies renting pumps without instructions.  Liz Flight in
