Leaha, Chris, Sue and many others: If you experience burning or irritation
of the vagina or penis following contact with commercial spermicide, you
may be allergic to it or developing a sensitivity to it. The homemade
spermicide developed by Dana Mozer, NP and published in the All Women's
Health Services Newsletter (Winter 1997) is as follows:
1 cup water
1 1/2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
5 tsp. salt
10 tsp. cornstarch
10 tsp. glycerine
Heat the water, lemnon juice and salt in a double boiler (I don't use one)
until the salt dissolves. Add cornstarch and stir until mixture thickens.
Remove from heat and stir in glycerine vigorously. Store in a tightly
sealed container in the refrigerator and use as you would commercial
spermicide.
This spermicide is as effective as commercial spermicides (which need to be
used with a diaphragm, cap, or condom), but no claims are made regarding
its ability to kill HIV.
Have fun and if this looks like a playdough or gak recipe, well all the
better. Can't you just see my 6.5 year old? (Yes, I make my own playdough
too) : )
