I wrote about this client a few weeks ago. The baby I felt might have a
"high palate" with subsequent open cracked nipples on mom, poor suck and milk
supply and poor wt. Well slowly things were improving, infant was gaining
slowly, nipple sores improving as well as supply due to fenugeek and hand
expression (mom does best with this), baby though has gone back to old
problems, poor suck at breast or bottle. Mom has had to resort to bottle to
get enough down baby. Mom has plans to see a speech pathologist who has
worked with infant suck problems and will be requesting a referral to a peds.
(she has been seeing a trusted family Dr.) Mom has tried EVERYTHING (short
of a nippple shield and plans to try that) This is a very committed
breastfeeding mom who nursed for long periods all her other 4 children. I
guess, I'm venting as much as anything....I can see her sense of frustration,
grief, anger. She lovingly trying very hard but I think she is seeing this
relationship that she would love to share with this baby slipping
away.....and I can't seem to help. She also has plans to see another LC I've
worked with. So I guess......I'm just wanting a shoulder too.
