I have just been heartened by lovely, concerned ICU nurses. One of my
patients was in the ICU because of what we think was acute fatty liver of
pregnancy with an accompanying coagulation disorder and renal shut down -
very sick cookie. The ICU and mother-baby nurses made sure the baby came to
visit often. One particuar ICU nurse, on her own, helped with the breast
pump (mom couldn't nurse right away because of the several drugs she
required) so the mother-baby nurses didn't have to come over so often. Best
of all, the ICU nurses understood the importance of breastfeeding to mom and
babe. I think the bonding that mom formed helped her exit the ICU
faster....V. Nichols-Johnson, MD
