Oh no! This is getting awful. I think it would be of help to point
out to the mother that the baby did not have to be weaned because of
sertraline (Zoloft). One should also question the need for this
mother to be on antidepressants when a physician suggests watering
down artificial milk as a therapeutic approach. There were some
articles in the American Journal of Diseases of Childhood regarding
water intoxication. I wrote a letter in response, which was published
in AJDC 1992;146:1131-2, so that the article would have been published
in the 6 months or so before. There was also an editorial by Dr.
Finberg (Mr. Fluid and Electroyltes)
If relactation is not in the cards, then going off iron enriched
formula may do the trick.
This is an abuse of power on the part of the physician.
