>Yesterday a mom called me to tell me that her MD had put her on penicillin.
She had been instructed to feed the baby an ounce of formula after each
nursing because of the small amount of medication in her breastmilk. Traces
of that in the baby's mouth could cause a thrush infection in the baby
according to her doctor.

My favorite response to a mother who is questioning her HCP's recommendation
(especially if I think it's unnecessary or harmful) is "How do YOU feel
about that?" If she responds the way you think... then pursue a dialog and
provide her with factual info and possibly documentable literature. I have
often initiated dialogs with the care provider as well. A polite letter or
phone call referencing your interaction with "your mutual" client is often a
"professional foot in the door" with that provider. One of our roles is
building bridges with other health care providers and allied health
professionals so that we can provide a free exchange of ideas, information
and education.
