Hello. I have been lurking on Lactnet for some time: I am a La Leche
League leader and mother of Ben, 6 and Hannah, 3, and living in
beautiful Williston, Vermont with my dh Jeff.
A woman called the other day with a question about intraductal
papilloma. I have read all the previous Lactnet postings and the new
BAB, and still need some help. She is currently pregnant with baby #3,
due mid-August. Five years ago, about 2 years after weaning baby #2,
she experienced bilateral bleeding from her nipples. One milk duct was
removed from each side (dr. told her it was the same duct each side - ?)
and she received a diagnosis of intraductal papilloma. She had no
sensation in her nipples for some time, but that has since returned.
She has a high-risk pregnancy, as were the last two. She very much
wants to breastfeed, and is concerned about her ability to do so this
time, the possible recurrence of the papillomas, and wants to know why
and how these happen. I told her that since sensation has returned and
only one duct was removed per breast, it seems very likely that she will
be able to breastfeed this baby, but I had no information about possible
recurrence or cause of the papillomas. Is there anything else I can
tell this mom to help her be prepared for breastfeeding this time?
Thanks for any help on this!
