Annette -
I had a similar situation when my son was born. I had two older daughters. The
younger developed the cough within a day or so of his birth. I expressed
colostrum for the girls and they were happy to take it. It seemed to help. We
also cut out dairy for a while to reduce mucus. The daughter with the cough
recovered well. Her sister didn't develop symptoms. However, my son took a
couple of weeks to regain birthweight - may have been unrelated, more likely due
to his reluctance to open his mouth wide. He also made mild 'cough-like' sounds,
but didn't show any other signs of illness. The doctor gave both girls a course
of mild antibiotic.
None of my children have had immunisation for whooping cough, so when the cough
developed, I was watching out for signs of potential whooping cough. I
recognised it from when my sister had it. I have to say that my daughter
recovered much faster than she did. But then my daughter had my milk to two
years and beyond...
I hope this helps.
