RE: Haiti and Breastfeeding
I just returned from a 11 day medical mission to Haiti.
The overall living and medical conditions in this poorest country
in the Western hemisphere are austere and unbelievable. The
infrastructure of Haiti just does not exist. It is one of the
most densely populated countries in the world.
I also visitied Mother Teresa's hospital for sick children.
The conditions of these children are beyond description.
What does this all have to do with breastfeeding?
If children in Haiti survive birth, MOST babies do well until
they are weaned. Most often infants are put at risk when
they lose their mother's milk with the immunity it provides.
It is rare for newborns to be brought to Mother Teresa's
hospital.
With all the complaining we Americans do out of our excesses
as compared to countries like Haiti where the complaints come
from basic needs, all of us need to count our blessings.
