There is a potential for conflict of interest, but with your awareness
of it, you can do much to prevent the appearance of as well as actual
conflicts of interest. I know of one LLLL who said, several years ago,
that LC/LLLL's should choose one and drop the other. I don't agree,
obviously. Suggestions:
1. get a separate phone line
2. although as LLLL we are not usually accustomed to discussing prices,
be very up front in the beginning about LC costs
2. read LLL literature on the differences between LLLL and LC and talk
to APL about your concerns
3. in your position as AAPL, remind LLLL that, whenever possible, she
should give 3 recommendation, and as a LLLL you do the same.
4. be careful how you advertise yourself in print - check w/ LLL if not
perfectly clear when you can use LLL
5. obvious things: don't hand out your business cards at LLL meetings;
don't introduce yourself in LLL mtgs as an LC
I am LLLL/LC. Two of my co-leaders are taking the exam this July.
Within 30 min. radius, we are fortunate to have about 7 IBCLC's.
