I am a gringa, marrried to a wonderful Mexican-American man. I breastfed
my three children because of him.  When I was pregnant and we discussed
BF vs bottle he looked at me like I was from another planet when I even
gave ABM consideration.  His Mother BF 8 children, the last 2 twins and
he really didn't think that any other way made sence.  My OB said that if
Jaime was supportive that half my battle was won so WHY NOT?
 I have 5 sister-in laws, one single and 3 who BF and supplemented right
from the start and the last who is at the 1 year mark feeding,
unsupplemented, like a champ.  Why did 3 of these women choose to
supplement.  1. the need to aculturate 2. peer pressure 3. lack of really
good support from spouses 4. poor advise from their health care
providers,Kaiser 5. with 2, WIC money for formula.  Even with the example
of two sister-in-laws who were fully BF (Sue with 5 children and me with
3) they choose to follow a different path.  Even knowing that the death
of their father at 50 from asthma and allergies was a good reason to BF
long term, it was not the mode in a East LA barrio.  Both Sue and I see
such a difference with this last sister-in-law, she was 9 when we joined
the family and she was impressed with our style of parenting and the
"whole thing" that she observed with our BF our children and she felt
very comfortable doing like-wise.  The others were already late teens and
young adults.  The moral of this story... early intervention and role
modeling as to the naturalness of it all.   Ann
