Jane and Dr. Jack:
I too have been waiting to reply to this thread. My 75 year old father had a
horrible case of oral thrush after 10 days of being NPO when he had part of
his stomach and esophagus removed. He was on Nizoral (ketaconazole) for a
month with no improvement whatsoever. I suggested he leave his dentures to
soak in a water and baking soda solution for a couple of days and paint his
mouth with 1% Gentian Violet. He reported that he was completely clear and
pain free within 36 hours after ONE application. I have used GV sparingly
and pick the patients carefully to whom I recommend it,( I also work for a
pediatrician who recommends it.) When the parents respond to the label that
says "for external use only" I tell them the baby is not "drinking" it, we're
only painting the surface just as my mother-in-law painted animals on the
kids' boo-boos with it 30 years ago!! That usually gets a laugh from
them....
think GV is one of the ingredients in Triple Dye used for painting umbilical
cord stumps, and is the liquid used by radiologists and physicians for
drawing on skin for surgery and x ray therapy.
In our climate(humid Florida) we probably see alot more yeast than other
areas might. I con't remember a single case of yeast in two years in
California, but see it on a regular basis here in Jacksonville. When I came
back to FL 5 years ago it became painfully (no pun intended) apparent that
yeast was going undiagnosed and mothers were being told to wean. I'm very
appreciative of all the wonderful literature that is available in the BF
world ( thanks Dr. Lawrence. Riordan& Auerbach, K. Hoover Faith Ploude,
etal) and to all of the speakers at conferences that have given us such
informative programs.
Liz Flight, {Cup feeding protocols in the mail.... I may be calling on y'all
for assistance with other hospital policies and procedures in the very near
future!!!}
