Hi all - I'm working with a lovely mother who has a 2 week old day old baby.
Has had a "text-book" start to breastfeeding, baby has already gained
50g/day since hospital discharge (300g, 10 oz over birthweight). Right
breast lets down so forcefully at the beginning of each breastfeed that baby
makes little whooping sounds with each swallow, finally can't keep up,
chokes and lets go. Mother becoming frightened of this, asks nurse at
paediatrician's rooms what to do about it. Nurse replies that it could be
lethal if the baby's lungs fill with milk, and if it happens she should get
him to the hospital fast! Comments anyone? (meanwhile we're working on
ways to nurse uphill and the situation is improving ...)
