Nancy, this lady needs further help. The problem is, I do not think that
she really wants it. The bottle feeding of EBM is not so good either...I
would recommend that she use an eye dropper, or a periodontal syringe at
breast, or on mom's biggest finger. [or Dad's/]. As for history of
premature weaning, it sounds like she gives bottles, and that is why baby
turns away from breast at only a few months old. She should be evaluated
for several things, including thrush [baby does not need to exhibit outward
symptoms. May only have a diaper rash, or nothing visible at all.], or
short frenulum [does baby have heart shaped tongue when it cries?], or a
dozen other things.
The part that thrush can be invisible is something that is not that
well-known, and I find that thrush is responsible many times for those deep
cracks that refuse to heal.
