Thanks to all who shared your combacks to insensitive/ignorant BF remarks.
Here's my most-used:
ARE you still/how long are you going to be- breastfeeding?
I want to make sure he doesn't get drafted...
I'll never have to worry about him staying out too late on dates - he'll have
to come home and nurse...
I only have HE comebacks because when my second, a daughter ,was born ,family
members knew enough not even to bother with such questions. They were
probably pretty amazed when she weaned a full year earlier than her big
brother. I think it helped people to understand that this was a sure sign
that the length of time differed because THEY differ. Back to normal
varations of children, away from wierdness of Mom.
These couldn';t have come at a better time - on Mother's Day weekend I will
be part of a conference session entitled "The Other Side, Please - nursing
those who are old enough to ask" I think humor is a great relaxer, and a tool
for these moms. I plan to open with, the "if he's old enough to ask, he's too
old to nurse - I'll remember that next time you ask me for something."
Thanks again, Judy, Brooklyn, NY
