Pierette, I have found the football hold very effective for mothers with
carpal tunnel problems. However, it is difficult for them to get the
position right without hands-on help. Most tell me from the outset that
they have tried the football hold and don't like it or don't find it
comfortable. If that is the case they are usually not doing it right. The
thing most often forgotten is to have a pillow under the baby's bottom so
s/he doesn't feel s/he's falling as Mom lets her elbow slip away. The other
common error is failure to bring the baby back far enough. Usually, mom is
afraid to "crush" the baby. I tell her the baby likes to be "crushed"
because it is tight and safe-feeling like in the womb. Once she gets the
position right and baby is nursing well, soft cushions can replace both
hands to support the baby. Down or feather cushions are great.
I hope that helps.
