Has this happened to anyone else?
A pharmaceutical rep telephoned me, asking that I promote a particular
oral contraceptive because, according to him, it was suitable for
breastfeeding women. I told him that this wasn't part of my job, I'm not
a physician, and don't think it is appropriate for me to recommend a
particular birth control method. He was extremely persistent, even after
I told him I wasn't a doctor. I asked him WHEN should breastfeeding
women take this pill, since fully breastfeeding women don't menstruate
and may never get a period before conception. Hmm....he didn't
know...he'd find out for me...he got back on the line and said that
partially breastfeeding women should start when the baby is three weeks
of age, and fully breastfeeding women, at six weeks.(Isn't that kind of
like wearing a belt and suspenders?-US joke)

On the subject of birth control, two women at my prenatal breastfeeding
class both became pregnant bec. they had missed their scheduled tubal
ligation appointments, and had no backup birth control...they were told
to go off their hormonal method (one was using depo provera injections)
because the anesthesia "could cause allergic reactions if they were on
the depo". So they had stopped their birth control, and missed their
appts, and got pregnant. Does anyone know what this is all about
(allergic reactions and depo?) The amazing thing is that the patient
said, oh yes, depo causes all sorts of side affects (!) yet it was her
method of choice!!
