I have a few mothers in my practice who have breastfed exclusively
despite breast reduction surgery on both sides.
It is possible that Swedish surgeons are more careful, more aware of the
risks to breastfeeding. After all, "baby friendly" by definition
extends to more than pediatricians, postpartum nurses and midwives.
"Baby friendly" is a state of mind which permeates the whole medical
community. As Dr. Nylander (Norwegian obstetrician) said at a
conference in Toronto a few years ago (and I paraphrase) "We should be
willing to take risks for breastfeeding".
